Start with about 3/4 inch sand.
Add just enough water to make the sand moist.
Pat down the sand level.
Add a layer of rocks. (We used shiny rocks collected at the beach)
Then a layer of dirt.
Plant small cute little plants. Succulents are my choice.
Yay!
Cheers!
-madey edlin
I need to do this.
btw- what plants did you use and where’d you find them? 🙂
I used some creeping Jenny, moss, and a few little succulents. I got them from my grandma 🙂
…and I just made you Pintrest-famous. 😉
This is a great post! I am doing this asap with several galss things I have which need to be re-purposed! Thanks for the easy instructions! AmberLena

LOVE it!
🙂
nicely done, and easier than keeping fish, which has failed me in the past.
So cute!
Wow. I have never hear of terrariums before. It looks so simple and amazing 🙂 Thanks for sharing !
Very creative! Great work!
Its a mini forest! lol…that statement makes me sound stupid.
http://bloggeroutcast.blogspot.com/
very pretty I might just have to try this!
Very cool idea!
Where did you get your glass bowl/vase? Such a lovely idea, and easy, too! I like easy 🙂
I picked it up at a thrift store 🙂
I made a terarrium in a 10 gallon fish tank when I was a kid. It had plants, trees, a stone lined path and tiny street lights. I should do this again. Thanks for reminding me.
OK that sounds like the most awesome terrarium EVER! I’m totally going to have to try that for my kids’ room.
I will have to make this a spring/summer project. Thanks!
I love my pickle jar terrarium – the only one of my 150-ish plants that I never need to water (I closed the top of the jar with cling wrap).
Very cute! What a good idea!
This is really a good work. I appreciate your efforts behind that. Have a great day!
When do the fish arrive??? …
AWESOME post!!!
Perfect small garden, good stuff…

beautiful. i love it!
What a nice way to add some green to your space! I love planting but I’m not really good with plants…this seems manageable.
Very clever idea! 🙂
This is absolutely beautiful! It’s full of creativity while booming with originality.
I do have a question though. Why is it you have an empty fish bowl? Was it purchase specifically for this shoot, or has a tiny fish passed away? Better yet, is it even a fish bowl? Do tell.
Great post!

@madey edlin- you are a genius. That is the most gorgeous terrarium that I have ever seen.
Simply awesome !
wow, looks amazing!
Fun! My mom once did a terrarium in a small-ish fish tank, it was neat to watch things grow. Very peaceful too.
What you need are tiny dinosaurs…
Haha that entered my thoughts too 🙂 One of the first things that ran through my head was, “my nephew would love to get his dinos in there” hahaha

O’ that was Great! I’ve always wanted to know how to do that. Now, I need a terrarium. Just what I need more plants:)
Yeap, definitely trying this. My desk (and me) needs this. NOW!
I love the smallness of these! I made one for myself last mother’s day using an old aquarium we had laying around. It’s really added that certain something to my drab bedroom 🙂 I want to try one of these with my kids! Thanks for sharing!
So cute!
Looks awesome! Do you need to water it?
Yes! You need to keep them moist 🙂
I love this! THank you for posting. I had been wanting to make my own terrarium and didn’t even know where to begin.
That’s a really cute idea! 🙂
I love terrariums, thank you for posting this.
Terrariums used to be such the rage in the 70s! I remember helping my mother and my grandmother make them and they always fascinated me. Grandma’s had a little frog that lived inside. I’d honestly forgotten all about that until I saw your post. Thanks for the happy memories. If I ever find time, I might make one of these. Congrats on being Fresh Pressed today – MoSop
adorable
Yep, I agree with Grishnnakh, my desk is waiting for something more interesting than files and folders. Two thumbs up, like the pictorial instructions…couldn’t be any simpler than that ( never thought about putting sand in….great tip). Thanks.
great post! i’ve been wanting to make one of these for a while now. thanks for the tips and inspiration! =)

I’ve got to do this this weekend. Love it!
Great pictures. I am a big fan of making dioramas. A terrarium is something I have been meaning to try next.
I’m totally gonna do this with my boys!
…… I must do this. I MUST!
How inventive, and so simple to do! I love it, have to add this to my list of must trys!
This is gorgeous… what a unique idea!
Love, love, love! Reminds me of my childhood! Thanks for sharing! I hope to create one sometime!
Ah, you bring back memories. I made one of these when I was a child.
this is beautiful.
What a great idea! I will have to try this out with my kids. It seems like a very family friendly project.
Thank you so much for doing this. I work from my home and was thinking the other day of some fun, crafty, green projects my son could help me with to decorate my office. I saw one of these at the Lawn & Garden store and was wondering how to do this myself with out killing the plants…LOL! LOVE IT!

so freaking crafty! I am going to try this now. 😀 Any idea where I can get small succulents like that? Or moss? Thanks!
Thanks so much!
I think you can get succulents from nurseries. As for moss, I’m not sure, living in Oregon moss growers everywhere; so I just got mine outside my back door 🙂
HEY! I just made a couple of those yesterday! It’s so fun. But mine don’t look as cute as yours.
But practice makes perfect!
Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed!
Amazing. Check out my blog! I plan on doing this when I get some small plants from a friend.
Really beautiful photos of the process.

Beautiful and yet so simple! I may have to give it a try, except I’ve killed every succulent I’ve ever owned. I wonder if I could make the correct adjustments and do it with a mini African violet.
you just made me think what i want to do this summer. thanks!

wow really very good picks……really very good blog
Thanks for the simple tutorial and what a great idea! There’s stuff like this at my local garden centre but it costs a fortune for what it is. I never thought of making them myself but now I will. I’m going to do three of them to put in my conservatory.
Thanks Again!!
Wow! This is really awesome!! Just out of curiosity, have you added any “creatures” or find any lurking within the soil? Lol.
This looks so easy and fun! I think I will try it with the kids I babysit. (I may be asking for trouble but I can always say, “Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time…”)
Most intruiging. Never before have I observed such a seldom practice. Perhaps I will invest a few hours into making my own. Where exactly would one acquire such glassware? Thank you for this inspirational post, mate! 🙂
LOVE!
That is too awesome! I will definitely try doing this. Stop by and say hi 🙂
lovely post.. i’m going to try this and i have some little succulent plants in my garden that i could make use of.. thank you for sharing.
beautiful, cant wait to make one
lovely terrarium! additional tip: it’s a good idea to add a layer of charcoal prior to the sand to help absorb moisture and excess minerals since the water can’t flow through (especially if you have an open top terrarium and need to add water). I have had terrariums for 15 years and this master gardener tip helped save a few! Thanks for posting.

making one.
Well, I know my project for this summer, now! Thanks so much.
I have an online friend named Eric Warren. He does all kinds of awesome little terrariums like this. Mine will probably have some small bugs in it, too. Maybe even a frog or salamander, if the container’s big enough.
Thanks for sharing this! A few of these would make a perfect Easter brunch table arrangement. Loving this idea and gives me inspiration for my blog http://ecochiceconomist.wordpress.com/ and sharing the Pinterest love too
