DIY terrarium

Start with about 3/4 inch sand.

Add just enough water to make the sand moist. 

Pat down the sand level.

Add a layer of rocks. (We used shiny rocks collected at the beach) 

Then a layer of dirt.

Plant small cute little plants. Succulents are my choice. 

Yay!

  14. I made a terarrium in a 10 gallon fish tank when I was a kid. It had plants, trees, a stone lined path and tiny street lights. I should do this again. Thanks for reminding me.

  38. I love the smallness of these! I made one for myself last mother’s day using an old aquarium we had laying around. It’s really added that certain something to my drab bedroom 🙂 I want to try one of these with my kids! Thanks for sharing!

  44. Terrariums used to be such the rage in the 70s! I remember helping my mother and my grandmother make them and they always fascinated me. Grandma’s had a little frog that lived inside. I’d honestly forgotten all about that until I saw your post. Thanks for the happy memories. If I ever find time, I might make one of these. Congrats on being Fresh Pressed today – MoSop

  46. Yep, I agree with Grishnnakh, my desk is waiting for something more interesting than files and folders. Two thumbs up, like the pictorial instructions…couldn’t be any simpler than that ( never thought about putting sand in….great tip). Thanks.

  58. Thank you so much for doing this. I work from my home and was thinking the other day of some fun, crafty, green projects my son could help me with to decorate my office. I saw one of these at the Lawn & Garden store and was wondering how to do this myself with out killing the plants…LOL! LOVE IT!

  77. Beautiful and yet so simple! I may have to give it a try, except I’ve killed every succulent I’ve ever owned. I wonder if I could make the correct adjustments and do it with a mini African violet.

  106. Thanks for the simple tutorial and what a great idea! There’s stuff like this at my local garden centre but it costs a fortune for what it is. I never thought of making them myself but now I will. I’m going to do three of them to put in my conservatory.

  114. lovely terrarium! additional tip: it’s a good idea to add a layer of charcoal prior to the sand to help absorb moisture and excess minerals since the water can’t flow through (especially if you have an open top terrarium and need to add water). I have had terrariums for 15 years and this master gardener tip helped save a few! Thanks for posting.

    I have an online friend named Eric Warren. He does all kinds of awesome little terrariums like this. Mine will probably have some small bugs in it, too. Maybe even a frog or salamander, if the container’s big enough.
